How the conversion works

A page of 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins holds roughly 500 words single spaced and 250 words double spaced. Those two numbers do almost all the work: every figure on this page is your word count divided by one of them.

They are conventions rather than laws. Switching to Arial fills pages slightly faster because its letterforms are wider; Calibri at 11pt fits noticeably more words per page. Margins matter just as much β€” moving from 1-inch to 1.25-inch margins costs you roughly a tenth of every page. If you are within half a page of a hard limit, check the document in the exact font, size and margins your institution specifies rather than relying on any estimate.

Reading and speaking times use 238 and 130 words per minute respectively, which are the commonly cited averages for adult silent reading and for presenting aloud at a comfortable pace.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is one page?

One page holds about 500 words single spaced or 250 words double spaced, assuming 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. At 1.5 spacing a page holds roughly 333 words. These are the standard academic assumptions; a different font or margin setting will change the result.

How many pages is 500 words?

500 words is 1 page single spaced or 2 pages double spaced at 12pt with 1-inch margins. It is the most common length for a short essay response or a personal statement section.

Does font choice change the page count?

Yes, noticeably. Times New Roman at 12pt is the standard assumption behind these figures. Arial runs slightly wider so fills pages faster, while Calibri at 11pt is narrower and fits more words per page. If you are close to a page limit, always check in the exact font your institution requires.

Do titles, references and figures count toward the page total?

This converter estimates body text only. Title pages, reference lists, tables, figures and appendices all add pages beyond the word count, and most institutions exclude references from the word limit while still counting them toward the physical page total.
